Crafting Ash Bowls
Every ash bowl I make begins in my small workshop in Midlothian, where I carefully select locally sourced British ash for its strength, character, and beauty. Ash is a light-toned hardwood known for its toughness and flexibility - qualities that have made it a favourite among woodworkers for centuries. It’s ideal for bowls: hard-wearing, reliable, and full of subtle visual interest.
As I turn each bowl on the lathe, I work with the grain rather than against it. It’s a pleasure to work with - and just as pleasing to hold, use, or display.
No two bowls are ever quite the same, but each one celebrates the natural strength and simplicity of this timeless British hardwood.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
In most cases, yes - my ash bowls are finished with food-safe oils or waxes, making them suitable for serving dry foods like bread, fruit, or nuts.
If a particular bowl isn’t food safe (for example, due to a decorative finish), this will always be clearly noted on the individual product page. I recommend using ash bowls for dry or room-temperature foods only, and not for liquids or oily dishes.
-
I work exclusively with British ash, sourced through small, trusted timber merchants and often from locally felled trees here in Scotland.
Ash is a beautiful and versatile native hardwood, and I choose each piece of wood based on its grain, tone, and potential character.
This approach ensures every bowl is not only functional but also visually striking and responsibly made.

Ash is a durable hardwood, but like all wooden items, it benefits from gentle care.
To clean your bowl, simply wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it straight away.
Avoid soaking it in water, and never put it in the dishwasher.
Over time, the finish may dull slightly - when that happens, you can refresh it by applying a light coat of food-safe oil or wax. This helps protect the wood and brings back its natural lustre.
-
No - each ash bowl is hand-turned on my lathe, and no two are identical. While I may revisit certain forms, the grain patterns, proportions, and subtle curves vary from bowl to bowl.
That’s part of the beauty: each one is a unique, one-off piece made with care and attention to the wood’s individual character.
-
Definitely. Ash bowls make thoughtful, long-lasting gifts for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and housewarmings - or simply as a special thank-you.
Because each bowl is handmade and one of a kind, it feels personal and meaningful, especially for anyone who appreciates natural materials or handcrafted objects.

I don’t currently offer custom orders, as I work in small batches and prefer to let the wood guide each piece. However, I regularly add new ash bowls to the shop — so if you don’t see the right one today, there’s a good chance something will catch your eye soon. You’re always welcome to get in touch if you’d like to be notified when new stock is added.
